How to choose a tennis court: a checklist before you book

Indoor or outdoor, surface, lights, ball boys and how to pay — what to check so there are no surprises.

Two courts with the same hourly rate can give you very different afternoons. One has lights, parking and a ball boy; the other has a puddle at the baseline. Here is what to check before you book.

Indoor or outdoor?

Outdoor courts are usually cheaper and more plentiful. Indoor or covered courts cost more but save your booking when it rains, and they are kinder in the midday heat. In the rainy season, an indoor court is often worth the difference.

The surface

  • Hard courts are the most common. The ball bounces fast and true, and they are easy on scheduling because they dry quickly.
  • Clay courts are slower and softer on the knees, but they can close after heavy rain.
  • Synthetic grass or carpet is found at some venues and plays somewhere in between.

If you're a beginner, any well-kept hard court is perfect.

What the rate actually includes

Ask before you pay:

  • Is the rate per court per hour, or per player?
  • Is there an extra fee for lights after dark?
  • Is a ball boy required or optional, and how much is it?
  • Do guests pay a separate fee?

Who can play there

Some courts are open to anyone. Others are inside subdivisions, clubs or condominiums and are only for residents, members and their guests. If a listing says homeowners or members only, book through the association or a member you know.

How to book and pay

Many venues take bookings by message and payment by GCash or bank transfer. Others have online booking. Keep a screenshot of your payment and confirmation until after you've played.

The small things that matter

  • Parking, and how far it is from the courts
  • Restrooms and somewhere to sit between sets
  • Drinking water or a shop nearby
  • Whether coaches are allowed to teach there
